I happen to like the permanent underclass explanation very much. Very well articulated by Theodory Dalrymple in Life at the Bottom. Some people really don't like to work, and do just as little as they can to get by. If the government is willing to let them mooch, they will take that deal every day. Others claw their way out of the underclass and never look back. They'll take any job they can get rather than mooch. There is always work for someone who is a willing worker.

I also believe that globalization is a net win:win for the whole globalized world. We are all far better off as a result of the free flow of people, capital, goods, and ideas.

The clearest example of this is right before your eyes, Elmat himself, bringing infrastructure to the world.

The "giant sucking sound" Ross Perot was railing against, lest you forget, was NAFTA, which liberalized trade between the US, Canada, and Mexico. I find it hard to believe that you oppose free trade with Canada and Mexico.
