Very interesting Bloomberg article. SEC could clear up the lack of transparency by requiring that the breakdown of all the transactions behind the net numbers be disclosed. Then we could evaluate the counterparty risk. "Net" means very little until one knows the quality of the counterparties whose dealings on either side of the transactions allow a bank to claim a net exposure of zero.
