Essential Communications, a leading provider of Gigabit networking solutions, today
announced the release of JackRabbit(tm) version 1.0, a Gigabit Ethernet NIC for SGI's
Octane and Origin systems, becoming one of the first companies to bring a Gigabit Ethernet
product to market.

switches and routers over the past 5 years, has enabled us to deliver this product in a timely
fashion."
The JackRabbit Gigabit Ethernet NIC includes Essential's proprietary ASIC design known as
Roadrunner. Essential's Roadrunner ASIC is being licensed to a growing number of other
Gigabit Ethernet NIC developers, a testimony to Essential's leadership role in Gigabit
networking. Last month, Essential Communications announced a collaborative effort with
SEEQ Technology, a leading manufacturer of Fast Ethernet components, to develop a new
PCI-based Gigabit Ethernet controller offering 32- and 64-bit PCI bus interface NICs and
MACs (Media Access Controllers) for cost-effective, high bandwidth, and high-speed
networking.
"With many of the larger players announcing delays of their Gigabit Ethernet products, we
anticipate a significant demand for our new JackRabbit Network Interface Card," said

Essential's JackRabbit is a PCI-based Gigabit Ethernet NIC that is fully compliant with the
IEEE 802.3z.D3.1 specification. JackRabbit NICs for SGI Octane and Origin products are
available immediately. Essential's Gigabit Ethernet drivers will be available for Windows NT,
Sun Solaris and IBM AIX systems by year's end.
