The problem with MF Global is that is was a futures broker. The SIPC doesn't cover futures, and I guess MF did not have additional insurance. Or at least enough to cover $1.5 billion.

And co-mingling of assets in a brokerage firm is illegal. Someone should go to jail at MF.
