Shell looking at US for next GTL project

Shell’s next area of focus for a new gas-to-liquids project after its landmark Pearl GTL scheme in Qatar is likely to be the United States, a company executive said.

Andrew Brown, Shell’s executive vice president for Qatar, said the company is carrying out early feasibility studies for a project in North America.

“We will look for places where gas is cheap and oil and products are more expensive so that we get some margin between the two and clearly the US is somewhere that has those kind of attributes at the moment.

“But these are long-term projects and if we were to ever take a position there in the US we would have to have some confidence about the long-term outlook for oil and gas prices. But we are indeed looking at projects in the US.”

Brown said a new project would be dependent on proving the success of the $18 billion Pearl GTL project.

He said: “So we continue to look for the opportunities but our chief executive (Peter Voser) has been very clear the first step is to make sure Pearl is fully working and fully ramped up and then we will look where else next after that.”

If another project does go ahead it would probably be a large-scale project, said Brown, and that newer technology would be likely to lead to lower capital costs and a more efficient carbon dioxide footprint than Pearl GTL.

Meanwhile, Shell is progressing with a seismic programme over Block D off Qatar, where it is exploring with Qatar Petroleum and PetroChina.

It hopes to begin drilling within a year or two on a deeper horizon below the giant North Field, Brown said.
