Apple: U.S. DoJ Also Probing eBook Sales, Says WSJ

blogs.barrons.com

By Tiernan Ray Investigations into the market for prices for electronic books are spreading, The Wall Street Journal’s Thomas Catan reports today, with the U.S. Department of Justice saying this morning it is conducting an anti-trust investigation to determine if there’s collusion between book publishers and Apple ( AAPL), which sells e-books through its “iBooks” bookstore.

Catan cites remarks by anti-trust chief Sharis Pozen at a congressional hearing.

The revelation follows a report yesterday that European Union officials are probing Apple and five publishers to determine if they illegally raised prices for e-books at the introduction of Apple’s iPad in the spring of 2010.

Apple shares today are down $2.24, or half a percent, at $388.71.
