Simon Derrick, chief currency strategist at Bank of New York Mellon, sees the euro’s resilience as a testament to the ongoing desire of emerging-market nations — particularly China — to diversify their reserves away from the U.S. dollar. While the repatriation story has some appeal, Chinese reserve growth matches up almost perfectly with the euro’s performance over the course of the crisis, he said.
