The "posh" club in my county just hit their members with a $4700 assessment. My club can't do anything like that without sending members running droves, but they did modestly increase our dues for next year. They've also taken actions like closing our grill room two days a week during the off-season which is really going to hurt the employees. This article pretty much nails it. The number of courses in my county doubled in the 90s, and now one-by-one, they're disappearing. cockeysville.patch.com
