Here's some things that might help the tech stocks to rally:

Some easing of tensions over Asian currency and liquidity problems combined with an apparent diplomatic resolution to the Iraq situation:

yahoo.com

AMAT reported earnings of 49c/share and 47c/share after a write-off. That beat First Call street estimates by a penny. What was more important, IMO, is that the company was very encouraging about the markets in Asia and the rest of the world. During the conference call, management said that sales picked up considerably toward the end of the quarter and that they expect strong growth in Asia to continue to be propelled by the need for DRAM and logic manufacturers to build parts at sub 0.25 micron. They think that there will be a shortage of capacity for MPU and other leading 0.25 micron logic next year and for a shortage in capacity for DRAMs starting in 1999.

One of the factors that may not be fully figured into analysts forecasts is the extent to which the markets for electronic goods are elastic - the amount they are stimulated by lowering prices. Several markets that have had shallow growth last year and this year should see very robust growth over hte next several months - driven by a bunch of new products at very attractive prices.

I think the equipment stocks and many of the semi stocks will rally a bit tommorow and next week. Quantum is, of course, the best of the bunch of HD/storage company stocks but all of these may recover from the recent losses. I think the FUD about pricing will hold the HD stocks down for a while and QNTM will rise more that the others over the next few weeks. It may be into January or Feb. before it gets valued more reasonably based on its DLT business.

It's great to see the move up and a lightening of attitude on this thread! As much as I was down on Quantum from the move up, I have continued to feel much less ill at ease holding Quantum than almost any other stock I own.
