The profit margins aren't anywhere near what they get on the computer or Playstation platforms. The costs for producing cartridge games are much higher than cd based titles.

The silverlining in all this is that because of the high costs for the N64, many developers have shied away from Nintendo. Fewer games for this hot selling platform means greater attention and sales for those who do.
