I have a friend - when their kids were off to college, she and her husband sold everything and bought a sea going catamaran they had never sailed before - did their home work and decided on the cat because it is a calmer ride - then read and read and learned - a man who helped outfit their boat taught them quite a bit - they sailed day only at first, then as their skills improved, they went farther and farther and then everywhere did it for 7 years and loved every minute of it - oh the stories! she said charting was the most important [I guess you spend big on charts] he got sick at sea - they made it into port, but he died from a stomach aneurysm hours later she still misses that life, but can't do it alone
