I may have misspoken on the Fire. Clicking on the Books tab on the home screen show the books you have and you van go to the Kindle Store from there to buy books.

I have been getting books from the Washington Anytime Library. You need a library card from one of the participating libraries and can check out books. If one is not available you put a hold on it and have 3 days to check it out. Checkout has been complicated. I can't do the checkout process from the Kindle (or the iPad) but have to go onto my computer. With Kindle books, it takes you to Amazon and then you can download "to the cloud". From there you can fetch the book to the Kindle (or iPad or iPhone or all three). What I like is if I leave off reading on the Kindle and am then out and about and have a few minutes, I can pull out the phone and pick up where I left off on the Kindle. The application syncs to all devices and remembers where you left off.

It takes some getting used to, but I am liking it.
