I don't know about cats, but I've found a way to introduce a second dog to the family. Have done it several times.

You disappear to retrieve the second dog while another person (preferably someone your dog knows) holds your dog on a leash. Return with the second dog on a leash and allow the two dogs to see each other at a safe distance. Act friendly to the second dog, perhaps petting it.

When you are sure the two dogs are comfortable with meeting each other, then you can approach and let them sniff each other out as dogs do. Exchange leashes to consummate the meeting after they have done their thing.

The first time I tried this was when I brought Daisy to Juneau and introduced her to Annie, our older Springer Spaniel. It worked perfectly.

Every time I've tried this it has turned out well. My sister had a big Chesapeake who, she said, would kill Daisy. We followed the procedure I just described and the two became good friends.

Daisy is a very mellow dog, so be careful with excitable types.
