His comment about the Palestinians being an "invented people" was historically accurate but it served no useful purpose to make the statement. He should have just confined himself to saying that this was a matter for the Israelis and Palestinians to resolve and that other countries - and especially the US - should only get involved to the extent that both parties sought their mediation.

Frankly, his comment about the "invented people" is typical of his grand-standing and is very akin to his comment that Paul Ryan's plan was "right wing social engineering".

His comment was geared to the Jewish vote - entirely self-serving. His support of Israel is transient and subordinate to his own goals. If he thought that he could achieve a historical legacy in pressuring Israel to make major concessions he would do it in a heart beat. His sense of grandiosity and ego would be the controlling factor. He would love to be the president who went down in history as solving the Israeli/Palestinian problem.

The simple truth is that I don't trust Gingrich - and the fact that many conservatives who worked with him don't do so either offers no solace.
