Talisman in Polish shale gas spud Talisman Energy has expanded its shale gas exploration footprint in Poland after spudding another well.

The company has broken ground at the Rogity-1 well in the Braniewo S licence in the Baltic basin, partner San Leon Energy announced on Tuesday.

The well, operated by Talisman, is targeting unconventional gas plays in the Lower Silurian, Ordovician and Upper Cambrian layers, Irish independent San Leon said.

The well is the second of a three-well programme in the Baltic basin with an additional well to be drilled on the Szczawno licence early next year.

On the latest spud, San Leon commented: “This area is believed to be less thermally mature and is considered to carry more risk than the western part of the Baltic basin, but the company believes it has the potential for a more liquids rich production.”

San Leon is holding out for large shale gas potential in Poland, chief executive Oisin Fanning telling Upstream last month that strong gas shows from the Lewino 1G-2 well drilled on the Gdansk W concession in northern Poland’s Baltic basin confirmed the potential of the shale play. Fanning said this indicated that “there is definitely gas throughout the whole system”.
