People do change and probably one of the most notable examples is Ronald Reagan.

But it is an almost evolutionary process and certainly was the case with Reagan. The whole problem with the "new" Gingrich is that it is a very recent phenomenon - really pretty much after he decided to run for office. If you look at his record over the past ten years or so, there is little evidence of a change to a more conservative philosophy.

I hardly ever read liberal columnists when it comes to issues like this because their bias is too blatant. But I do give credence to conservative columnists who I respect. I cited Krauthammer and Will in an earlier post.

Here are two other conservative columnists whose views on Gingrich are worth reading:

Richard Lowry

Ann Coulter

Here is Fred Barnes - who is one of the conservative columnists who is somewhat supportive of Gingrich - who faults Gingrich's attack on Romney as being something that Obama would say and Ted Kennedy said:

Defeating Obama is essential but a Gingrich presidency is akin to jumping from the frying pan into the fire. I don't care for Romney but I believe he would cause less damage to the conservative cause than Gingrich.
