You don't remember the Pony Express (Eric Dickerson & Craig James).............................SMU boosters were paying top dollar to get recruits to come to SMU to play football in the late '70s and early '80's. They landed Dickerson and James the same year. They were probably the most talented football program in the NCAA. Ron Meyer was their coach in the early '80s and left for the pros when he knew it was going to become exposed. The NCAA penalized them so heavily that their program never came back to even being close to a prominent Div 1 program. It was the ultimate death sentence.

SMU was part of the old Southwest Conference which had Texas, Arkansas, A&M, Texas Tech, TCU, Rice, Houston, etc. when Big 8 & the powers of the SWC merged to form the Big 12.
