I was in college at that point as well and remember it vividly (I graduated in 1983). Perhaps you were having Big 10 tunnel vision at that point in your life. Drexel didn't have a football program so had to reach out. Penn State won the national championship with a win over Georgia (Hershel Walker). SMU was the only undefeated team (had one tie against Arkansas) but didn't get a chance to play for the title.

If you get chance, check out the schedule on ESPN and watch it. Definitely worthwhile
