DOJ disputes Microsoft zdnet.com

Just to complete the quick online survey, this is from PC Week.

There, the DOJ cites a Dec. 20, 1996, E-mail between Jim Allchin, senior vice president of Microsoft's personal and business systems groups, and Paul Maritz, group vice president of the platform and applications group, stating that in order for Microsoft to win a browser war with Netscape Communications Corp., it must leverage Windows and should "think first about an integrated solution."

The DOJ claims this is clearly a forward-thinking statement and one made well after the consent decree had been filed.

Also in that E-mail, Allchin states there is no way Microsoft can beat Netscape by copying its product features and packaging. Instead, he says, Microsoft should "leverage the Windows market share."

This article also cites the Spyglass license, which was Jan. 11, 1995, so that predates Win95 shipping somewhat, I guess also the final consent decree. Not by 2 years, though. Let the judge sort it out, I say.

Cheers, Dan.
