NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — Time magazine made the right call when it chose “The Protester” as its 2011 Person of the Year. Time TWX -0.50% announced the recipient of the annual award on Wednesday morning, On its website, Time declared: “A year after a Tunisian fruit vendor set himself ablaze, dissent has spread across the Middle East, reaching Europe and the U.S., reshaping global politics and redefining people power.”

The most profound development on the world stage in 2011 was the stunning series of protests that, indeed, reshaped the world and showed how individuals could make a major difference.
