Marching around in rank and file, like a Roman legion, is totally retarded.

Couldn't agree more. But marching is a legacy of those times that we've carried into present day.

But I think only part of drill and ceremony (D&C) training is for the purpose of "wowing" the layman observers and politicians..

The rest it to build a sense of esprit d'corps and unit cohesion. There is a sense of teamwork and pride that comes from properly executing various orchestrated movements. And that's a good first step towards bringing diverse personalities into a combat effective team.

But more time has to be spent on movement at the soldier, squad, and platoon level on the battlefield. And of course, reacting to ambushes and indirect artillery are critical as well.

We've gotten much better at it in the years since 9/11, with the Army dramatically raising their training standards. The marines were always fairly good at infantry tactics (all marines are trained as infantry first), as well as being damn sharp in their D&C..
