EBay Offers $10 In-Store Discount By Danielle Kucera - Dec 16, 2011 4:32 PM ET . . Amazon drew criticism from Senator Olympia Snowe, a Maine Republican, last week for offering a 5 percent discount to entice people to use a new mobile application to compare prices with physical stores. While EBay also offers an app for price checking it doesn’t actively compete with retailers on its site. EBay is “trying to be the anti-Amazon in a sense,” said Colin Sebastian, an analyst at Robert W. Baird & Co. in San Francisco. The company is “positioning itself as a partner with traditional retailers, where as Amazon is trying to accelerate that shift away from stores.” . EBay has developed relationships with brick-and-mortar stores this year through the $2.4 billion acquisition of GSI Commerce Inc., which manages websites and inventory for 180 retailers, including the ones participating in EBay’s promotion. bloomberg.com
