Under $20? I can beat that wine for under $5. (Poor reference to some obscure game show from a while back.)

I'm in charge of wine this year for the family Christmas dinner.

I'm afraid...very afraid...because my niece has turned out to be quite the connoisseur and has for the past 10 years brought the wine. Okay. So she's a wine snob. There! I've said it. She's in Canada where the wine is much, much more expensive which is why I decided this is my year.

So, since September I've been buying and tasting wine which I think she would approve. I do the whole flavor thing...sip, reverse whistle before swallowing, get the aroma.

One of the wines I've decided to take is $3.99. What? In the reverse whistle test I found this distinct flavor that I couldn't name even though it was very familiar and quite pleasant. Couldn't figure it out so broke down and read the label. Lychee. All of a sudden is was so clear to me. I couldn't resist putting it on the list and can't wait for her reaction when I tell her it was $3.99. The label also says it's more suited to asian cuisine but what the heck.

It's a Chilean wine, Carmen Gewurztraminer, 2007. I think she once told me that white wines shouldn't really be kept all that long. Will I prove her wrong? Fingers crossed. (I've got other wines to cover my butt in case this one bombs.)
