12/16/11 Contest Update
Holiday shoppers were out in full force this week, but weren’t much tempted by the discounts on stock prices. At Friday’s close, the NBI was up 7.35% YTD (vs. up 8.82% YTD a week ago) and the Contest median was down -7.12% YTD (vs. down -4.23% YTD a week ago). The Nasdaq Composite Index was down -3.68% YTD (vs. down -.23% YTD a week ago).
With little time left before the Contest ends, first place MCBIO’s portfolio (up 65.47% YTD) may have an insurmountable lead. But the final weeks of the year often have some big surprises and second place JIBAC’s portfolio (up 53.97% YTD) and third place ROCKY’s’s portfolio (up 48.12% YTD) might yet pull off an upset victory.
At Friday's close, 12 of the 38 Contest portfolios were in the black, while 9 were beating the NBI.
Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks ranked by % Gained and % Lost for the week (foreign stock prices are not converted to US$ in these two tables).
Portfolio adjustments: None

2011 Contest end date: I’m still planning on Friday, December 30, as the Contest end date. Current Contest leader MCBIO has already posted his Charity pick (United Teen Equality Center at: utec-lowell.org and if anyone else looks like they’re in the running closer to 12/30, I’ll encourage them to pick their charity in time to take 2011 tax deductions.
In the past, some folks wanted to donate to my personal charity pick, as well as the Contest winner. So, my charity pick is the same as last year: the WriterCoach Connection, linked at writercoachconnection.org

2012 Contest: I assume folks want to have another Contest next year. But I’d appreciate it if those who expect to enter a 2012 Contest post such intention, to get an estimate of the interest.

Have a safe & fun weekend biotechies!
(All corrections, especially adjustments for splits, greatly appreciated.)
