In my experience, nothing compares to Alsatian Gewurtz. All american ones seem to have too much sweetness whether intentional or not. A great Gewurtraminer is a revelation to many. The name is off-putting and matching can be a problem, although I, like you, think it is great counterbalancing some heat. Most will be beyond our $20 target but Trimbach makes a good Gewurtzaminer. Trimbach makes a nice affordable pinot gris as well.
