Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Samsung Galaxy SII and other top smart phones from Korean giant have taken Samsung sales beyond 300 million for 1st time
Samsung has broken its record and has sold more than 300 million handsets this year. Reuters reported Samsung breaking the record at the end of November, besting a 2010 total of 280 million handsets sold.
A Samsung executive informed, “We attained the 300 million mark because we’ve introduced hit models in succession by banking on upscale designs and cutting-edge technology.” But Samsung did not officially comment on the number.
The firm had last updated the number in October, stating that global sales of its Galaxy S and Galaxy S II devices had hit more than 30 million. The Galaxy S II had sold 10 million since its February debut.
A recent data by comScore also stated that 25.5 % of smartphone users in the U.S. had a Samsung device in the three-month period ending October 31. IDC also backed the data, further adding that globally, Samsung topped the smartphone market in November after Apple briefly took the crown.
Ramon Llamas, IDC Mobile Phone Technology and Trends senior research analyst, said, “Samsung’s ascendancy to the leadership position is the direct result of its broad and deep product portfolio. Ever since the first Galaxy device launched last year, the company has aggressively expanded and refreshed its selection to include the latest innovations and most popular features. At the same time, its line-up of Bada-branded smartphones has earned a welcome reception within key markets.”
Yoon Boo-keun is going to lead the consumer electronics business that includes visual display and digital appliance businesses. He also served as the president of Samsung’s visual display business. On the other hand, mobile chief Shin Jong-kyun will head the information technology and mobile team, which expanded its territory into IT solution, network and digital imaging businesses, as well as the media solution center.
Samsung officials also added, “We expect the reorganization to provide better business opportunities between the units and with our suppliers as we officially announced independent operation systems for finished goods and subparts since constructing the device solutions unit (in July).”
Choi will head the finished goods sector, while Kwon will take charge of the subpart divisions. Choi had been heading the Samsung Electronics for two years since the two-top system of Lee Yoon-woo and Choi was halted in late 2009.
In another reshuffle, Samsung LED chief Kim Jae-kwon was repositioned as the electronics arm’s global operation head of the mobile communications business. This beamed the projection that a joint venture between Samsung Electronics and Samsung Electro-Mechanics will soon merge with the company.
Former Google employee David Eun has been appointed as executive vice president who will support media-related divisions. |
