hi siber....

re: mexican wines.....

first off, i would suggest that you avoid the major producers like l.a. cetto or monte xenic....i actually went to a tasting at monte xenic and was really shocked at the 'sulphur' taste on most of the wines we tasted....i personally would not have even served that wine....

where the valle de guadalupe wines get really interesting is the smaller artisenal wines....and yes, you pretty much need to travel there to experience it (along with the amazing foods)

the white wines are still not particularly noteworthy, but the BLENDS are some of the best wines i have ever had....(and i'm a 'white wine' person)

there is a winemaker there originally from mexico city (trained in bordeaux france) who has a wine school in the tiny town of porvenir....he has been a major influence....people are calling him the 'mondavi' of mexico...

here's a link where you can read more about him and the school

finewineandthecity.blogspot.com

interestingly, one of the wineries was run by an american businessman (retired) who i dined with and in conversation, found out he was from my hometown of st. louis....of course the usual 'where did you go to high school' (local 'joke') ensued...

he hired hugo as his winemaker, and when we did the wine tasting there, i enjoyed them all but this was my favorite

he even had a rose wine that i enjoyed, i just couldn't believe it (usually i won't even touch a rose')

if you make the trip, which i consider well worth while...the import duties are pretty negligible, somewhat higher if you are a CA resident.....mexico has a pretty stiff tax on their wines, but you can buy some really nice wines in the $20 to $30 range...

we went to several extremely small wineries, i especially enjoyed tres mujeres (three women) winery....which is quite small....but fascinating....

bajabound.com

we purchased several bottles of one of the red blends (the name of which escapes me right now) and it was excellent as well.....

it's a lot of fun to talk to the winemakers....they all know each other and when we mentioned my BF's nephew was involved in his own winery still under development (though wine production has been ongoing for several years) their interest was always piqued <g>
