HSINCHU, Taiwan, Nov. 13 /CNW-PRN/ - Promis Systems Corporation Ltd. (Promis Systems), a leader in semiconductor and precision electronics manufacturing software and automation solutions and United Silicon, Inc. (USIC), a United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) company, in a signing ceremony here today announced an agreement worth in excess of U.S.$1.5 million dollars for the purchase of Promis Systems' Manufacturing Execution Software (MES) system PROMIS(R), Promis Encore!(R) products and associated services. This foundry, an 85,000 square foot joint venture between UMC Taiwan, Alliance Semiconductor, RealTek, SanDisk and Xilinx, will produce eight-inch ULSI wafers and is scheduled to ramp to 10,000 wafers per month by the end of 1998, and eventually to a production volume of 25,000. USIC shares a building in the Hsinchu Science Park with another UMC venture UICC which suffered a fire in September. The fire did not damage the planned USIC foundry. Ian McKinnon, Chief Executive Officer and President of Promis Systems said, ''As you might remember, UMC had historically used a competitive system. Winning, first at UICC and now at USIC demonstrates the relative strengths of our PROMIS and Promis Encore! products. Further, USIC illustrates the impact the MASE acquisition will have for Promis Systems as we move forward. MASE products, FAbuilder in particular, provided profound synergy with PROMIS in the solution and our sales success.'' Promis Systems partnered with Digital Equipment to provide a complete MES solution in this new foundry. This success demonstrates the value of the DIGITAL and Promis Systems' global semiconductor manufacturing solution ''SemiSuite'' by which DIGITAL and Promis Systems provide the systems integration, MES and Equipment Control Level automation respectively, along with proven third party applications as required. Promis Systems provides its MES solution to four out of the top five semiconductor wafer-foundries in Taiwan. Promis Systems' MES solution is the choice of UICC (also a UMC foundry), Vanguard International Semiconductor Corporation, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and Mosel Vitelic.
