I really don't think this is correct. First of all, when you say:

"The sale will be made by the MM who now has a short position."

You can't be certain that the MM is really on the other side of this position. Just because it's a new contract doesn't mean that the MM isn't matching up a writer/buyer. But, okay, let's say that in order to make the market the MM takes the other side. He is certainly not short. He already has the shares or will immediately acquire them so as not to be short.

Now, if Joe has an open position of 5 contracts and Fred has an open position of 5 contracts, then open interest is 10 until one of these investors closes his position -- either by buying or selling contracts.

Or maybe I'm just whistling Dixie.
