Here's a very interesting comment on the Keystone XL decision and Tar Sands oil -- from a Politico discussion board:

"Canada has its opposition to any pipeline and to the entire Tar Sands development. The attention that the Keystone XL has sparked brings the ultimate question into focus: which of two futures will we take? 1) Expanded unconventional fossil fuel exploitation, driving CO2 well past 500ppm and global warming well past 4C (hello 8 or 12C), or 2) Seriously invest in renewable carbon-neutral energy, which eliminates exporting billions of dollars and provides true energy and environmental security. The weakening and delays of controlling carbon emissions (of which Canada has performed poorly specifically because of the Tar Sands) is a future bill in trillions and a death sentence for millions as heatwaves, droughts, floods and famines (among other effects) ruin the capacity of the planet to feed 7 billion people. The $125 billion slated for investment in the Tar Sands is the most ruinous short-sighted business venture ever conceived. That same investment in carbon-neutral energy could profitably provide energy security and save the planet."
