The words democracy and republic are used interchangably. The right wing likes to argue that WE ARE A REPUBLIC as though that means something. It means nothing.

If calling us a republic rather than a democracy is important maybe someone can point out why they think the word matters? In practical matters.

I think they do it to enforce the idea of states rights. But the right wing liked states rights when they wanted to conserve segregation (code word), but not when they want to abolish abortion. Situational states rights.

The thesis of a republic and a democracy is simply that the masses rule themselves and are not ruled by a dictator or king. And there are a zillion types of republics and democracies.
