Interview with Mohsen Saleh, Professor at Lebanese University
Tens of thousands of Syrians have rallied in support of President Bashar al-Assad government in the capital Damascus, chanting slogans in favor of his planned reforms.
We hear the speeches only, words, empty words that they are with the Egyptian revolution or with the Yemen revolution or the Tunisians. Once it reaches to Bahrain or to Syria, in Bahrain they are with the regime..
I guess the Arab League failed to do anything good for the Arabs. That is why they are really now accompany, a kind of accompany of Al Jazeerah and Al Arabiya doing contracts with the Americans to save themselves from the revolution. They say that they are with the revolution.
Figures show that during the past weeks, plenty of pro-Assad rallies have taken place in cities across Syria.
Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March, with demonstrations being held both against and in favor of President Bashar al-Assad. Hundreds of people, including security forces, have been killed in the turmoil.
While the West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of the killings, Damascus blames ''outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups'' for the unrest that erupted in mid-March, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
Press TV has conducted an interview with Mohsen Saleh, Professor at Lebanese University, to share his opinion on this issue.
Following is a transcript of the interview:
Press TV: Tell us more about these recent pro-Assad demonstrations that we are seeing right now in Damascus.
Saleh: Of course the Arabs and the Americans and the Europeans should know that the majority of the Syrians are pro Bashar al-Assad and pro his regime and his reforms and his suggestions to reunite the feelings and emotions of the nationality of the Syrians.
And of course many demonstrations went into the stage in order to express their feelings and to express their demand for freedom and reforms according to the national law and reforms suggested by the parliament and by the leadership of Syria.
They do not want any foreign intervention, whether from the Arab League or from the [Persian] Gulf Council or from the United Nations. The Syrians have been, of course liking and having no problem with the policies specially the national policies of Bashar al-Assad in terms of the conflicts with the Israelis and with the Americans and of course with the people who are having some treaties with the Americans specially those who are directed from some youths in France specially the relationship with Burhan Ghalioun and other parts of what so called National Council, the Syrian National Council.
These people who go to the street, they say firmly that they want Syria under the Syrian umbrella and the Syrian policies and the Syrian nationality and of course they are going to do many demonstrations like this in order to say one thing- Syria is for the Syrians not for the people who are coming from outside like Burhan Ghalioun and others who are living all their life outside and now they are trying to give orders to the Syrians. Syrians are free under this regime policy.
Press TV: Mr. Saleh, earlier in our broadcast we had news of an Italian military plane which is reported it visited Lebanon to afloat supplies for the Syrian opposition. Give us your views on the agenda of how these forms are foreign intervention in Syria.
Saleh: Well I say they say to do anything against the Syrian regime and the Syrian people and the stability of Syria. They are some terrorist groups who have been trying to unsettle the situation in Syria but they couldn't do anything whether... on the borders of Lebanon or...on the borders of Jordan or from the borders of Turkey.
Fortunately, the Syrian army is united behind its leadership and they could really confront all these terrorist groups and of course to protect the Syrians from all of these gangs who have been ordered, financed of course by these people whether the French or from the [Persian] Gulf States or from the Americans.
They said obviously that they want to support these specially the Americans. They told them not to disarm themselves and to the country. Will the American or Europeans do the same thing with their gangs? I will say yes, that is why the regime in Syria is stable, powerful and could really have all the factions and the classes in the Syrian society under the national law. I would say the national law of Syria, not the law of people who want to enforce these policies on the Syrian regime or the Syrians.
Some gangs I guess would not influence the situation there, some people in Lebanon or in Turkey or in Jordan, they will regret these interventions in the Syrian internal policies and they will really pay a lot for this because Syria is going to be stable under this regime and under the policies in terms of the relationship with Iran, with the resistance, with Palestine and with Iraq and with the access of freedom in this region.
Press TV: Professor Saleh, those rallying in support of the government of Bashar al-Assad have also been rallying against the Arab League sanctions against Syria.
Now over the week end the Arab league also threatened to take Syria to the United Nations Security Council of the unrest that is been taking place since mid March. Give us your thoughts about the Arab League stance as a recent.
Saleh: As you know the Arab League is an echo of the American orders of some regimes in the region. And of course they do not want to do anything against the American policies in this region. That is why they are conspiring against Syria, against the resistance, against Palestine, against even themselves.
They do not respect themselves. They want ... give them orders whether in the [Persian] Gulf or in some parts of Lebanon opposition parties who really want to do a service for the American policies in the region, for the sake of Israel not for the sake of the Arabism what so called Arabism. |
