Umax pushes notebooks to 300MHz
By John G. Spooner, PC Week Online 11.20.97 6:00 pm ET
LAS VEGAS -- Umax Technologies Inc. will push the notebook speed envelope up to 300MHz with a new family of notebooks running a mobile version of Intel Corp.'s Pentium II processor.
The Fremont, Calif., company, a subsidiary of Umax Data Systems Inc., of Taiwan, has been showing a demo version of the notebook in its Comdex booth here this week.
Umax will ship the Pentium II in its Visual Note 500 family starting in March, company officials said.
The notebook family will include three units in prices ranging from about $3,000 to $5,000, officials said.
Umax's Visual Note 570T will combine a 300MHz Pentium II processor with a 14.1-inch XGA TFT (thin-film-transistor) display, 48MB of RAM (expandable to 128MB) and a 4.3GB hard drive.
The 560T, meanwhile, will feature a 266MHz Pentium II with a 13.3-inch XGA TFT display, 32MB of RAM and a 3.2GB hard drive.
Umax's 530T offers the same setup as the 560T but with a 233MHz Pentium II.
The units will include two multifunction bays. One will feature a 24-speed CD-ROM drive that is exchangeable with an optional DVD-ROM drive. The other will allow users to swap out a floppy drive, LS 120 drive, extra battery or second hard drive.
Umax expects the units to get about 2.5 hours of battery life.
