That's not how I remember it. Gorby was treated with great enthusiasm by most of Washington including the press. He toured the US and was treated like a rock star.

I could scarcely believe it when the USA continued to maintain the same belligerent stance against them.

Course our "Intelligence" establishment was feeding policy makers complete rubbish about the USSR so it's not surprising they eventually made muck of the situation.
