12/23/11 Contest Update
Santa Claus finally showed up on Wall Street. Or maybe it was Judah Maccabee. In any case, whoever it was convinced investors to go shopping for stocks. At Friday’s close, the NBI was up 10.89% YTD (vs. up 7.35% YTD a week ago) and the Contest median was down -4.70% YTD (vs. down -7.12% YTD a week ago). The Nasdaq Composite Index was down -1.29% YTD (vs. down -3.68% YTD a week ago).
With a week to go in the Contest, first place MCBIO’s portfolio (up 66.95% YTD) looks to have the lead locked up. But it ain’t over until it’s over. And second place is certainly in contention, with No. 2, JIBAC’s portfolio (up 57.07% YTD) and No. 3, ROCKY’s’s portfolio (up 55.08% YTD) in a tight race.
At Friday's close, 15 of the 38 Contest portfolios were in the black, while 9 were beating the NBI.
Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks ranked by % Gained and % Lost for the week (foreign stock prices are not converted to US$ in these two tables).
Portfolio adjustments: MRNA did a 1-10 reverse split.

2011 Contest end date: I’ll use Friday, December 30, closing prices for the final Contest tally. Likely Contest winner MCBIO has already posted his Charity pick (United Teen Equality Center at: utec-lowell.org for those who want to get their charity donation in early.
For those who’ve expressed a desire to donate to my charity pick along with that of the Contest winner, my choice remains the same as last year: the WriterCoach Connection, linked at writercoachconnection.org

2012 Contest: So far, the proposal to change the minimum number of portfolio stock picks from 8 to 6 has only generated four comments: one in favor, two opposed and one no preference. If you have an opinion one way or the other please post it. Unless a majority favors the 8 to 6 change, I’ll stick with the old rules.
I’ll post more info on the 2012 Contest some time next week. Meanwhile, folks might want to start thinking about their 2012 stock picks.

Have a wonderful holiday weekend biotechies!
(All corrections, especially adjustments for splits, greatly appreciated.)
