Yes, when USSR invaded Afghanistan it was their own Vietnam. It really did seem that they might just roll on down to the sea, which would be a controlling position over the oil supplies out of the middle east. And yes, even when Gorby had been in power for years, there was civil war [albeit brief, with shell's fired, tanks in the streets and Gorby taken prisoner]. The reason for their attempt was because he had so changed the situation and they did not like it and he was going to do more.

If he had been supported by the free world, then maybe he could have held on.

Yes, he said he was a communist, but most people in the USA are basically communists too in the same way. That's why government has got bigger and bigger and bigger with every election for a century and freedom has been more and more circumscribed. Look at them squealing as Ron Paul gains support.

It might be that enough people have realized what they have voted for in the past and will change their ways. I have from when I was young.
