Good summary. Good suggestions. And yes, probably won't happen.
I think what will happen is first, another bear market or two, with a decline in prices. Second, at some point politicians will choose to become knights in shiny armor. They'll say, screw the money, screw the banks, we need to help the people in trouble. And they'll mandate some form of cost of living adjustments, maybe in a form of the government issuing checks to match salaries - up to the level needed to help people meet their living expenses. Etc., etc. Maybe they'll offer "temporary help" with mortgages to those who cannot pay them. Things of this nature. When you see this, it's the end. Get ready for hyperinflation, and for "new" dollars to be printed some day, probably in a different color. Maybe pink. Also, expect the government to retain most of the emergency powers which they will acquire on the way down, on a "temporary" basis.
