The good of the nation depends on it not being a reactionary socially freakish religious backwater- and the only party likely to fight (somewhat) against that, is the democratic party (the libertarians also tend to be somewhat less religio-cratic- but they are so backward in terms of social interdependency in a complex society I can't consider them as sensible).

So while in theory a republican might turn up that was, in your words, "good for the country"- it would need to be a socially liberal one, imo, and Huntsman isn't that. You probably don't realize this- but most people vote republican or democrat because they think that is good for the country. I don't know anyone who votes for something because it is bad for the country. Do you know anyone who does that? Do you know anyone who places their personal "bias" ahead of "what's best for the country"? That seems stupid to me. We have personal biases because we think our biases are good for the country- that's why we have them.
