there are many reasons that a friend may go quiet for a period. I was talking about this just last night with a friend who I haven't seen or spoken to in 5 years. She was diagnosed with breast cancer 6 years ago and then went into "hunker-down" mode. Then my wife was diagnosed with cancer 4 years ago and we went into "hunker-down" mode. And during those times, we stopped socializing a lot. Financial strain can also cause people to hunker down. They may be embarrassed or simply not have the money to go out.
