I would agree that it is most unlikely that someone would intentionally vote for something that is, in your words, “bad for the country”.
However, that’s not quite the same thing as voting for something, or someone, that could be Better for the country.

I would not be at all surprised if many voters in the past voted Democrat or Republican because of their allegiance to their political party, instead of because they had thoroughly interrogated and analyzed the relevant credentials of the individuals standing for election.

Nicholas Schmutte is, according to his own admission, an avowed Liberal and someone who would not normally consider voting for a Republican. His ‘political bias’ no doubt tends towards the Democratic Party, and ordinarily he would vote for that party’s candidate.
However, he now believes that “we are at the point where we need to look past special interests and (should) do what is best for America.”

Personally I have great respect for someone like Nicholas who is prepared to put aside his political bias in his search for a candidate that he believes “is best for America.”
And whether that’s Huntsman or President Obama, or whoever, is a separate and personal issue of choice.
