i think political upheaval makes little difference to local and expat folks living on koh samui

the locals on the island know that tourism is what sustains them on their island

trouble-makers from mainland would have hard time finding lodging on koh samui and be run off the island

we were on koh samui in april-may of last year when bangkok was wobbling, and it was quite pleasant on the island as it was emptied of tourists and all who remained got greater then usually good service

in the past during the days of troubles in the philippines we had also vacationed there, and all was good or better
