You can't be certain that the MM is really on the other side of this position. Just because it's a new contract doesn't mean that the MM isn't matching up a writer/buyer. But, okay, let's say that in order to make the market the MM takes the other side. He is certainly not short. He already has the shares or will immediately acquire them so as not to be short.>>

Remember this is a dealer market, not an auction market like NYSE. All trades go through the MM. By short position, I am referring to
writing or selling the option contract. This may last only momentarily if a third party (fred?) wants to write the same position and sells to the MM. Here the MM profits from the spread. Your count of the OI is incorrect.
