No, I don't think it is whacko to talk to doves like you did. It makes the same kind of sense to me as, say, visiting a dear friend who had an accident and is in a coma and talking to him or her.

Neither the dove nor the comatose person may be able to answer, but they can hear.

After reading about Balaam's donkey speaking to him (Numbers 22:28) I have no reason to believe animals can't understand something of what we say to them, even if it is just what they derive from our facial expressions, tones and movements.

We don't understand what, if anything, they are saying when they make their cooing sounds, but it gives us a peaceful pleasant feeling.

May the Lord grant you a peaceful, pleasant Sunday also.
