My paternal grandmother loved to get her hands in the dirt. She told me that one day when we stopped by a house she rented to some folks with the stipulation she could grow a garden in the back yard. The renters were allowed to take vegetables for their meals as long as they left 1/2 for her. I'll never forget stopping by and harvesting carrots, beets, spinach and lettuce. We'd take it to grandmother's house, wash it up and before I knew it dinner was served. She used to make her noodles from scratch and had one of those red handled pasta wheels. I have it now and it is close by in a hutch I have in the kitchen. Every time I use something one of my ancestors owned I feel like something is being passed on.
