It looks like the old Canada is making a come back.
I agree with the general thrust of your comments but I would say what's coming up is a new old Canada.
The old Canada was a creature of wealthy Eastern families, so much so, a Premier of BC said, “Confederation...is a goblet to be drained by Ontario and Quebec.” He was right.
The still forming new old Canada is being created by a different conservatism coming from the West for which small government is good, individuals make a difference and are ultimately responsible for themselves, free markets are ideal, private property is fundamental, military strength is important, and for which history and custom, including the Monarchy, are vastly important.
These emphases are leagues different from the socialist, multiculti, PC, anti-tradition activity and policies which sprang up here the last fifty years.
Yes Canada is changing but it's very slow: two steps forward, a half step backward. I used to think this was unfortunate but now I'm thinking perhaps this is a good thing. We can't change fifty years of unfortunate habits instantly. Some things though, like health care, are going to require quick work over the next ten years because demographics are catching up with us.
I have to give the old federal Liberal party and the old establishment credit for one thing, though. They did fix the federal finances but for the rest, it was same old same old: more multi-culti, more pc-ness even though we could see it wasn't working well. |
