Rick Santorum's story has been one of hard work with no pay off for an entire year. But tonight's Des Moines Register poll numbers could change everything.
"Not just ahead of Gingrich, but also ahead of Paul in second place and in striking distance of Mitt Romney," said ABC News Political Correspondent, Jon Karl. "It looks like if this poll is accurate, we could see a situation where Santorum actually wins."
Just two weeks ago, Karl never thought it could happen.
"Let's be completely honest, we have utterly ignored Rick Santorum," Karl said. "We've paid no attention to him at all."
But if you take the last two days of the Des Moines Register Poll, Santorum is in second place with 21 percent support, behind Romney who has 24 percent.
Even after Santorum visited all 99 counties, he didn't gain traction with voters. Karl says now that he's got the numbers, he could get the vote.
"People see, they like Rick Santorum but they think the guy doesn't have a chance, he's not going to win," Karl said. "But now they see a poll that shows he's got a chance, I think that will give him further momentum as he goes forward." |
