That reminds me that I meant to put in a disqualifier about him. I saw his term, and I think it was generally seen, as a kind of interregnum, in which the next act would be the Reagan folk retaking the Rep party. Which happened with a vengeance. I just didn't see him as representative of the Rep party at the time, the way it was possible to see either Gerald Ford in 76 or Eisenhower in the 50s. In 76, Ford beat Reagan for the nomination, so the tide was clearly turning.
