In Dutchess County NY where I (and Shepard) lives, bears have, in the last 10 years, moved into the area.....moving over from western Mass. and Conn. So much so that the counties along the eastern side of the Hudson River (Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, Columbia, Rensselaer) now have a bear hunting season.
(44 bears taken this year) So, much so that I nearly (within 30 yards) hit one with my car. So much so that my friend had his bee hives torn apart by one. In northern NJ, the bears are already far too numerous. Bears are routinely seen now less than 30 miles from Times Square. This year 469 were taken in NJ including a monster 829 pounder

Of course, the environmental wackos continue to protest the hunt. Now, northwestern NJ is no wilderness. The number of bear/human encounters in neighborhoods is alarming. If bears are not annually and aggressively thinned out , it is only a matter of time until you will hear of a tragic encounter. Shepard is an idiot on so many fronts......it's probably (as is the 829 pounder) some kind of record.
