Haven't done that Yahoo search yet Shalom; am waiting until I get more interested in the "Jesus Seminar", but that might not ever happen. Incidentally, a magazine I read regularly is the New American. It is published by that bane of the left wing media, the John Birch Society. The conspiracy I see revealed in what they objectively report is a world-wide spiritual conspiracy in which the human participants don't realize they are on the broad path to destruction.
I found out recently who John Birch was: A Baptist missionary to China, before the US got involved in WWII. He went to China and learned to speak Chinese like a native, in a very short time (not a small task). After the US got involved in the war following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, he volunteered for the US Army, to serve as a chaplain in China. But the army didn't recognize the fundamentalist seminary he had attended and took a long time to respond (though they finally did, and turned him down as a chaplain). General Chennault, the commander of the Flying Tigers, asked John Birch if he would serve as his intelligence officer. Birch said, OK, if I can preach the Gospel on Sundays. Chennault, a God-fearing man, told him he could preach on Saturdays, Sundays and any other time, as long as Birch would put together and run an intelligence network. Birch did, and that network enabled Chennault's air squadron, deprived though they were of adequate fuel and supplies, to efficiently intercept a huge amount of Japanese shipping and air movements.
Birch also, before getting involved with the Flying Tigers, led General Dolittle (who led the first air attack on Tokyo) to safety after they parachuted into China.
Birch was murdered by the Communist Chinese, after WWII was over, while he was on his way out of China. The true cause of his death was covered up by the U.S. State Department, but John's mother uncovered it by travelling to the Pentagon and other locations and interviewing Chennault, and she also saw an army report of the actual cause of her son's death.
The cover-up led a man named Welch, a candy manufacturer, to form the John Birch Society in memory of the martyrdom of a servant of God and a lover of freedom.
The "Jesus Seminar" thing - I'll make a note to do a search on it, but be assured that I haven't doubted your word on what you found and I just believe Kent misunderstood and, unfortunately, left prematurely.
