Wegmans pulls (demented arch-liberal) Alec Baldwin ads

Actor Alec Baldwin’s short stint as a Wegmans Food Markets Inc. spokesman is over.

The Rochester-based grocery chain pulled television spots featuring the actor after some customers complained about his behavior. In December, Baldwin was removed from an airline flight for belligerently refusing to turn off a mobile device.

“We had perhaps a couple of dozen complaints, and we take complaints from our customers seriously,” Wegmans spokesperson Jo Natale said. She said the TV spots were filmed for the 2010 holiday season and were running again last year between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Natale said the ads, which featured Baldwin extolling the virtues of Wegmans while walking through one of the stores, were shown for two weeks of a three-week holiday run but were discontinued after the airline incident.

Natale said the company had no plans to use Baldwin as a spokesperson in 2012, a decision made independent of the controversy.

“We enjoyed working with Mr. Baldwin, but under the circumstances we thought it best to discontinue the ads,” Natale said.

Baldwin was hired to promote Wegmans after he mentioned on The Late Show with David Letterman that his mother, who lives in the Syracuse area, is a loyal customer.
